Introduction

First, let me begin by answering the burning question on your mind as you start reading this post. Who is this guy? Well, my name is Mariano DiFabio, and I’m a partner at a custom software development and management consulting company called Avelient. I’ve got a storied history in my career ranging across a variety of businesses, but in my recent history I’ve been doing a lot of work for the Pharmaceutical industry. I’d be happy to tell you more if you really want to know, but I’m afraid most of you will be bored to tears with me by the time I’ve finished.

When I set out to write this blog, I wasn’t quite sure where to start. So much has happened in the Biotechnology/Pharmaceutical industry over the last few years that there are plenty of topics to choose from. There are even plenty of Blogs out there to discuss these trends and countless opinions that could easily thrust this blog into obscurity over a short time. So how are we different?

I can personally give you information on my own experiences, which, at least to my knowledge, aren’t published anywhere. I’m also hoping to have some guest bloggers from my meetup group, “The New York Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Meetup,” which is growing more and more with people involved in every facet of the industry, from advertising to technology to legal to research.

One thing I’ve been particularly interested in as of late is the sudden change of the Pharmaceutical industry to identify and suspend sale of products in the market that have been linked to a higher mortality rate as a result of taking the medication. The trend started with Vioxx and Bextra, but has since moved on to other drugs, the most recent of which is Zelnorm. Legal issues and any missteps made by the pharmaceutical companies aside, it prompts an interesting question: would you rather live without pain for fewer years or live for a much longer period of time but in pain?

Personally, I would take the drug in spite of the risk. My quality of life is more important to me than the quantity. I’d be interested in hearing your on perspective on the topic.

Hope to hear from you soon!
