What an interesting product. I love the idea of this, however, one can see the potential downstream effects of a vaccination like this, especially as you outlined in the post. Could you imagine the civil rights debates this would cause? Should children be vaccinated...and what if there were court ordered vaccinations? Also, as Mariano says in his comment, it removes the effects of the drug not the addiction, so if there is no pre-existing addiction that's one thing...but an addict would still suffer the withdrawal and physical effects of detoxing. As you mention that is a huge commitment. There's no recourse for relief with this vaccination, this would be almost like a "bite on the belt" kind of decision.

Really good stuff! Thank you!

Really interesting article, Scott. From a sociological standpoint, I would also be curious if this kind of vaccination would cause addicts to turn to another drug to get the high. After all, the vaccination appears to remove the user's ability to get high, but not their addiction.

And does the vaccination chemically address the effects of possible withdrawl symptoms?

It's a great first step, but I think there are going to be lots of studies done to determine whether it's effective in deterring the addict.
