It was a wise man who said that health is wealth, because there is truth to this statement in more ways than one. There is no use of life without good health, an asset that no amount of money can buy. Also, in what is probably an irony of sorts, the personal health industry has made tons of money in trying to sell “health” to people. It’s the one thing people are ready to spend money on, even though they know that the product or service they’re buying is either worthless or hardly effective without any personal effort. But, the health industry is doing rip-roaring business because:
- Beauty is not a beast: Everyone wants to be beautiful, and they’re willing to pay the price to achieve this beauty that the world thinks is necessary to get ahead. And so you have thousands of cosmetic surgeons doing roaring business, fairness product manufacturers taking the gullible for a ride, and doctors and quacks alike offering miracle cures for the permanent removal of warts and acne. It’s like an obsession to become beautiful –they want the perfect shape, complete with breasts and butt. And they’re willing to put themselves through the pain of surgery to achieve this goal – to others it may seem like a case of vanity; to most people though, it has become a basic necessity.
- Thin is in: Yes, it is healthy to be thin, but it is not healthy to take weight loss pills and other such concoctions to become so. Diets that claim to work wonders, tiny pills that you pop to melt large amounts of fat, and creams that promise to eliminate all that unwanted and unsightly cellulite – people know that they don’t work, but they still spend a lot of money on such products in the hope that they somehow will effect miraculous turnarounds in the way they look.
- Health is the new buzzword: And rather than go back to the way of our ancestors and follow a sensible diet and regular exercise to achieve good health, people have begun to rely on products that are packed with antioxidants, supplements and vitamins to keep them healthy and disease-free. They smoke, drink and stuff themselves with fatty foods, and then they undergo detoxification programs to cleanse their systems. They subject themselves to stress on a regular basis, and then seek to negate its effects with stimulants that don’t help at all. In fact, they have a negative effect in the long run. And when their health is affected, they buy all sorts of products that claim to provide relief because, as they know well enough, health is wealth.
Yes, health is indeed wealth, but not the kind of health that comes in a bottle or as a pill. It’s the health that we are born with, the health that we must maintain through a disciplined lifestyle, and the health that we must conserve if we are to age gracefully that is the true wealth we carry throughout our lives.
